The Birrarung Riverfest is back this September, and it’s bigger than ever. Over 60 events will unfold across 23 days along the entire Yarra River, from the bustling city to the quieter suburbs. The festival kicks off on Saturday 6 September and closes on World Rivers Day, Sunday 28 September, offering something for everyone—from family‑friendly activities to arts, culture, and environmental action.
A Festival That Keeps Growing
In just three years, the Riverfest has become one of Melbourne’s most beloved cultural and environmental celebrations. In 2025, the Yarra Riverkeeper Association (YRKA) has brought together more than 200 event hosts and volunteers from diverse sectors, and the festival is expected to attract over 2,000 participants. The programme has doubled in size and tripled in attendance, reflecting the community’s growing passion for the river and the planet.

- Wildlife & Nature – Spot platypuses, join sunset paddles, and explore the river’s natural heritage.
- Arts & Culture – Enjoy gig nights, art‑led sensory walks, and performances that celebrate the river’s spirit.
- Family‑Friendly Fun – From sunrise walks to guided tours, there are plenty of activities for kids and adults alike.
- First Nations Stories – Wurundjeri‑led events such as “Bushfood and Bush Medicine” in Abbotsford bring traditional knowledge to the fore.
- Conservation Projects – Plant habitat for the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeater and the Lowland Leadbeater’s Possum at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area.
- Educational Workshops – Learn about stormwater pollution, river stewardship, and how everyday actions impact the Yarra.
- World Rivers Day Finale – A grand celebration at Federation Square featuring a flotilla of boats, music, art, and ceremony.
